Enhancing Water Quality of Assi River under the National Mission for Clean Ganga

Overview

A prestigious and challenging project was undertaken by Rite Water Solutions and ORAIPL under the aegis of the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG). The goal of the project was to reduce the pollution load on river Ganga or its tributaries.

The Assi River, which discharges into the sacred Ganga River, has seen a drastic decline in water quality due to increasing levels of untreated sewage, exacerbated by rapid population growth in the surrounding area. The existing Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) was insufficient to meet the growing demand, resulting in untreated wastewater being discharged into the Ganga River through this channel. An alternative solution was urgently required to improve water quality and reduce contamination levels in the river.

Challenges

The project presented several complex challenges:

  • High contaminant levels: The untreated sewage carried a high pollutant load, requiring
effective treatment solutions to ensure clean discharge into the Ganga.
  • Short implementation timeframe: Time was of the essence as the contamination had a
direct and immediate impact on the river’s health.
  • Space restrictions: The project site was highly constrained in terms of available space,
adding difficulty to the design and construction phases.
  • Accessibility issues: Limited access to the site due to its location at the confluence Point
of Assi River & River Ganga, further complicated installation and maintenance operations.
  • Complexity of in-drain application: The solution had to be seamlessly integrated within the drain to ensure continuous and effective treatment.
  • Fluctuating flow rate: A robust system was needed that could quickly adapt to the highly
variable flow in the channel and effectively treat the water regardless.

Vayuj's Role

Vayuj played a key role in providing both design and implementation expertise for the project,
ensuring that the proposed solution would meet the stringent requirements of the NMCG and the
Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Our scope of work included:

  • Hydraulic and piping design: To ensure smooth operation under challenging conditions, Vayuj designed an efficient hydraulic and piping system capable of handling fluctuating flow and high contaminant levels.
  • Plant design in a restricted area: Working within space constraints, we engineered a compact yet highly efficient design for the treatment plant.
  • Ozone distribution system: We designed and implemented the in-drain distribution system to effectively distribute ozonated water, ensuring thorough treatment of the sewage before discharge.
  • Installation and commissioning: Vayuj oversaw the complete installation and commissioning of the system, ensuring it was up and running within the given timeframe and met all operational requirements.

Conclusion

The project was successfully completed within the stipulated time, and the water quality of the Assi River improved significantly, helping to protect the health of the Ganga River. The innovative use of ozonated water and the efficient design allowed for significant contaminant reduction despite the space and accessibility constraints. The water quality parameters before and after treatment are mentioned below.
