The client, Shri Guru Ram Rai Darbar Sahib, a revered religious institution in Dehradun, faced water quality challenges in the temple pond, especially during the annual Jhanda Mela festival. As a festival celebrated on a massive scale, it attracts a lot of pilgrims and visitors from all over the country. With the influx of devotees, contamination issues and soiling of the pond result in sanitation issues and water waste. Seeking expertise, they engaged Vayuj and ORAIPL to implement a water treatment system for addressing issues such as algal growth, and water turbidity, and ensuring visually clear and odour-free treated water for this auspicious festival.

Project Scope

Objective: Improve water quality in the temple pond through advanced filtration and oxidation processes.

• Challenges:

  • Address algal growth, and water turbidity, and ensure visually clear and odour-free treated water.
  • The large size of the water body to be treated.
  • Limited intervention was required for operation and restrictions on the plant area.

Vayuj's Role

Vayuj played a key role in providing both design and implementation expertise for the project, ensuring that the proposed solution would meet the stringent requirements of the NMCG and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Our scope of work included:

  • Hydraulic and piping design: To ensure smooth operation under challenging conditions, Vayuj designed an efficient hydraulic and piping system capable of handling fluctuating flow and high contaminant levels.
  • Plant design in a restricted area: Working within space constraints, we engineered a compact yet highly efficient design for the treatment plant.
  • Ozone distribution system: We designed and implemented the in-drain distribution system to effectively distribute ozonated water, ensuring thorough treatment of the sewage before discharge.
  • Installation and commissioning: Vayuj oversaw the complete installation and commissioning of the system, ensuring it was up and running within the given timeframe and met all operational requirements.

Solution

We proposed and implemented a comprehensive and tailored solution to cater to all the challenges with a simple 2-step water recirculation plant:

Filtration:

The filtration requirements were for higher flow rates and removal of solid matter as well as chemical contaminants in trace quantities. To address these points, a dual media filter was implemented.

• Designed and developed a dual media filtration system tailored to the specific needs of the pond.

• With rigorous quality checks and standardized components, we ensure that we provide efficient and durable filtration components.

Ozonation:

To deal with biological contaminants, algal growth and odour issues, an ozonation system was suggested as it requires no raw materials and limited operator intervention.

• Engineered an ozone-based disinfection plant for effective water purification.

• An oxygen-generation plant was also supplied to ensure optimal ozone output.

• An automated control system is put in place for ozone dosing in the recirculated water.

• Considering the large size of the pond, a suitable water recirculation was developed for proper treatment of the entire volume of water.

• For homogenized distribution of ozonated water, a combination of high discharge-rate pumps with evenly distributed nozzles along the pool surface area was used.

• Internal piping and hydraulic design were done with cost optimization as the priority.

• Conducted rigorous testing to ensure the efficiency and reliability of the dual media filter and ozonation plant.

• Successfully handed over the fully operational water treatment system to the client.

Results

  • The implemented solution significantly improved the water quality of the pond.
  • The added contamination load during the festival was taken care of by the system ensuring
    crystal-clear water for the devotees.
  • A reliable and low-maintenance water treatment system was provided for stress-free
    operation.
